A dental front desk is one of the busiest jobs in the clinic. The same person checking in the 10 a.m. patient is also collecting payment from the 9 a.m. patient, confirming tomorrow's schedule, sending a predetermination to an insurer and answering the phone. When two of those happen at once, the phone loses.
Calls also cluster at the worst times: first thing in the morning, when people wake up with a toothache; at lunch, when patients finally have a minute; and after 5 p.m., when the clinic is closed but people are free to call. A single coordinator can't cover all of that, and adding another full-time person for the phone alone is a big cost for most practices.
